New Permanent Representative of Türkiye Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Presentation of Credentials

Burak Akçapar, the new Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Akçapar had been serving as Türkiye’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2023 to 2024.  From 2021 to 2023, he was Ambassador of Türkiye to Spain, concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador to Andorra, and as Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations World Tourism Organization from 2022 to 2023. He was Director General for Foreign Policy and Analysis at the Ministry from January 2019 to May 2021; Acting Director General for Conflict Prevention and Crisis Management from July 2018 to January 2019; and Director General for Policy Planning from January 2017 to July 2018. 

A career diplomat since 1988, Mr. Akçapar served as Ambassador to India from July 2011 to January 2017, concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador to Sri Lanka (2011 to 2012) and to Maldives and Nepal.  Other foreign posts include serving as Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Türkiye to the United States from November 2004 to November 2008; and as an International Staff Officer within the Defence and Planning Operations Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization from 1998 to 2002. He was Vice-Consul at the Consulate General of Türkiye in Hamburg, Germany from September 1993 to September 1996, and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Türkiye to Qatar from August 1991 to September 1993. 

Mr. Akçapar holds a Doctorate Iuris in International Law from Hamburg University, as well as a Bachelor in Political Science from Boğaziçi University.  He has written several books and received a number of awards.
