NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF IRAQ PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Mohammad Sabir Ismail, the new Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Ismail had been serving as Head of the Asia and Australia Department at the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2010. He was Iraq’s Ambassador to China from 2004 to 2010. In 2004, he was appointed as an Ambassador at the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2001 to 2004, he was the Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in Washington DC, and from 1993 to 2001 he was the Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in France. He was the European Representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, based in Stockholm, from 1978 to 1993.

From 1983 to 1993, Mr. Ismail worked as a part-time assistant at the Nuclear Physics Division of the University of Stockholm and then as a researcher at the Department of Physics at the University.

Mr. Ismail has a B.A. in science (1965) and a B.Sc. in physics (1969); a M.Sc. in nuclear physics (1981-1983); and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Stockholm (1988). He was born on 1 July 1947 and is married with two children.
