NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

John Chrisostom Edmund Sandy, the new Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Sandy had been a Senator in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago and Minister of National Security from May 2010 to June 2012. From 2004 to 2010, he worked as a Security Consultant and Chief Executive Officer for two private companies and from 2003 to 2004, he was a Corporate Manager for Human Resources and Security at a State-owned enterprise.

From 1966 to 2002, Mr. Sandy was a member of the Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago. He was Chief of Defence Staff with the rank of Brigadier General from 2000 to 2002. From 1997 to 2000, he was Defence and Military Attache to the United States, posted at the Embassy of Trinidad and Tobago in Washington DC. From 1994 to 1997, he served as Contingent Commander of the Caricom Peacekeeping Forces in Haiti – Operation Uphold Democracy and United Nations Mission in Haiti UNMIH - and was also Vice Chief of Defence Staff.

Mr. Sandy has a BSc degree from the University of the West Indies and an MSc degree from Springfield College in the United States. He has also attended several military training courses, and has been awarded numerous honours and decorations. He retired from the military in 2002 after 36 years in service. He is married with four children.
