NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Choi Seokyoung, the new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Choi had been serving as Deputy Minister for Trade at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade since 2010. During 2009, he was Ambassador for the Doha Development Agenda, and from 2006 to the end of 2008, he was a Minister at the Korean Embassy in the United States. In 2004 and 2005, he was part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat in Singapore, first as Deputy Executive Director and then as Executive Director.
A career diplomat, Mr. Choi served as Councellor at the Korean Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York from the end of 1998 to the end of 2001; and he was a Councellor at the Korean Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva from the end of 1993 to July 1997. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1979 and served as Consul at the Korean Consulate General in Hamburg, Germany from June 1986 to June 1988, and then as First Secretary at the Korean Embassy in Kenya from July 1988 to November 1993.

Mr. Choi has a B.A. in German Language and Literature from the Seoul National University (1979) and an MBA from the Korea Development Institute, School of Public Policy and Management in Seoul (2004). He was born on 1 October 1955 and is married with two children.
