NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CAPE VERDE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Jose Luis Monteiro, the new Permanent Representative of Cape Verde to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Monteiro had been in charge of Cape Verde’s relations with the European Union since 2001. From 1994 to 2001, he was Cape Verde’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. From 1990 to 1994, he was Secretary of State for International Cooperation, and then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. He was Director-General for International Cooperation from 1985 to 1990.

Mr. Monteiro joined Cape Verde’s Administration in 1977, working both at the Ministry for Planning and Cooperation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Monteiro studied law at the Universite Classique de Lisbonne, but his studies were interrupted in his third year because he became a political refugee in France from 1973 to 1974. He has a degree in development studies from the Institut Universitaire d’Etudes du Development in Geneva (1982-1984). He was born on 29 December 1950 in Praia, Cape Verde and is married with three children.
