NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AUSTRALIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Peter Richard Woolcott, the new Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Information Service in Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Woolcott had been serving as Ambassador for People Smuggling Issues at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade since 2009. Prior to this he was First Assistant Secretary, South East Asia Division at the Department from 2007 to 2009. He also served as Australia’s Ambassador to Italy from 2004 to 2007 and as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta from 2001 to 2002.

Mr. Woolcott joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1981. He has held various positions in the Department, including that of Director of the Human Rights Section from 1992 to 1994; Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Manilia between 1994 and 1997; Director of the India and Indian Ocean Section in 1997; as well as Consul-General and Representative to the US Pacific Command in Honolulu from 1998 to 2001.

Mr. Woolcott holds a Master of Arts from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, as well as a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University. Born on 19 October 1953, he is married with two sons and a daughter.
