NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CAMBODIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG
Sun Suon, the new Permanent Representative of Cambodia to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, since 2003, Mr. Suon had been serving as Director of several Departments within the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation: from 2005 to 2007, he was the Director of the Department of International Organizations; from 2004 to 2004, he headed the Department of Asia and the Pacific; and from 2003 to 2004 he was the Director of the Department of America. From 1998 to 2003, Mr. Suon was posted to the Permanent Mission of Cambodia to the United Nations in New York, first as Counsellor (1998-1999), and later as the Deputy Permanent Representative (1999-2003).
Mr. Suon originally joined the Government service in 1979, entering the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following his doctorate studies in 1991. In 1993 he was appointed head of the Legal Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, rising to Deputy Director of the Legal Department in 1994, a post he held until his appointment to New York.
Mr. Suon has a Doctorate in International Law from Sofia University in Bulgaria (1991) and a master's degree in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University in the United States (2004).
Born on 23 April 1955 in Phnom Penh, Mr. Suon is married with one daughter.
