NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MYANMAR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

U Nyunt Maung Shein, the new Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Shein had been serving as Myanmar's Ambassador in Germany since 2002. He was concurrently accredited as Myanmar's Ambassador to Austria, Poland, Finland, the Czech Republic, and as the Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations Office at Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

A career diplomat, Mr. Shein joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar in 1968. He served as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea in 2001; Director-General of the Political Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1998 to 2000; Director-General of the Foreign Languages Department from 1997 to 1998; and Deputy Director General of the Political Department from 1996 to 1997. He has represented Myanmar at a large number of regional and international meetings and conferences.

Mr. Shein has also served at a number of Myanmar Embassies, including as Minister-Counsellor in Bangkok from 1994 to 1995; Minister-Counsellor in Tokyo from 1992 to 1994; First Secretary in Dhaka from 1987 to 1988; Third Secretary in Hanoi from 1975 to 1978; and Third Secretary in Bern from 1971 to 1975.

Mr. Shein has a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Arts and Science University in Yangon, Myanmar (1976) and a Master of International Public Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington D.C. (1984).

Born on 18 September 1945, Mr. Shein has received a number of medals and awards. He is married.
