Overview
The Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room (former Room XX) is one of the largest conference rooms at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). The main feature of the refurbished room is a ceiling sculpture by the prominent contemporary Spanish artist Miquel Barceló, one of the highlights on the guided tour route.
The renovation and the dome sculpture were funded through the ONUART Foundation, a Spanish non-profit, public-private partnership aimed at promoting the use of contemporary Spanish art to facilitate dialogue and multilateralism through the United Nations system in Geneva. The entire project cost the Spanish State almost 20 million Euros, representing one of the largest gifts ever donated to the United Nations.
The sculpture consists of many layers of coloured paints composed of pigments from across the globe, sprayed across the ceiling to create stalactites. The work is groundbreaking both artistically and technically and represents the themes of multiculturalism, mutual tolerance and understanding between cultures.
The Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room has 754 seats equipped with the latest technology, including the facility for web-casting. The furniture consists of mobile modules that allow flexible reconfiguration of the room to accommodate different United Nations bodies. The Room complies with environmental standards and offers easy access to the disabled.
