CONVENTION ON CERTAIN CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS (CCW) – LEBANON BECOMES THE 124TH STATE PARTY TO THE CCW

On 5 April 2017, Lebanon joined the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) and its Protocol I on Non-detectable Fragments, Amended Protocol II on Mines, Booby-traps and Other Devices, and Protocol III on Incendiary Weapons. Lebanon also joined the Amendment to Article 1 of the Convention, which applies the CCW and its Protocols to situations of non-international armed conflicts.

Ambassador Matthew Rowland of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Chairperson-elect of the 2017 CCW Meeting of High Contracting Parties, along with Ambassador Beatriz Londoño Soto of Colombia, President-designate of the 2017 Nineteenth Conference of Amended Protocol II, warmly welcomed the news of Lebanon’s accession to the CCW.

The Presidents stated, “We warmly welcome Lebanon's accession and encourage more states in the region to consider acceding and, in the meantime, to participate in the work of the Convention as observers.”

The purpose of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons is to prohibit or restrict the use of specific types of weapons that are considered to cause unnecessary or unjustifiable suffering to combatants or to affect civilians indiscriminately. The Convention itself contains general provisions. All prohibitions or restrictions on the use of specific weapons or weapon systems are the subject of the Protocols annexed to the Convention.
