COMMITTEE ON THE ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION CONCLUDES EIGHTY-NINTH SESSION

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination today concluded its eighty-ninth session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Spain, Oman, Rwanda, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Namibia on their implementation of the provisions of the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The Committee’s concluding observations and recommendations on the six country reports are available on the Committee session’s webpage.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Committee Rapporteur Alexei Avtonomov presented the Committee’s annual report to the General Assembly, which the Committee then adopted.

Anastasia Crickley, Committee Chairperson, in her concluding remarks, thanked everyone for their engagement in fulfilling the responsibility of the Committee in the monitoring of the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, with independence and neutrality. She stressed the crucial role of States in the implementation of the Convention, adding that the Convention would be of use only if it really addressed racial discrimination which affected so many people across the world.

The ninetieth session of the Committee will be held from 2 to 26 August 2016. The reports of Greece, Lebanon, Pakistan, Paraguay, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and the United Kingdom will be considered during that session and can be found here.
