WHO/UNAIDS launch new standards to improve adolescent care.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) are launching global standards to help countries to improve the quality of adolescent health care. Adolescents often miss out on essential health information and care because services do not meet their needs.
Not only are they vulnerable to particular health problems (the top three causes of death among adolescents are road traffic injuries, HIV/AIDS, and suicide), but adolescence is a critical point in developing behaviours that will shape health in years to come.
At this briefing, experts from WHO and UNAIDS will discuss why adolescents need specific attention and how countries can make health services more accessible and suitable to their unique needs.
Dr Anthony Costello, Director of Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health, WHO Dr Valentina Baltag, expert in adolescent health, Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health, WHO Dr Dirk Van Hove, Senior Programme Adviser, UNAIDS
