Ladies and Gentlemen:
It is a pleasure to welcome you all for this photographic exhibit, which will be followed by a special concert and dance performance. I especially thank the Permanent Mission of China for organizing this remarkable event which highlights the culture of China and one of its most historic and scenic provinces. Sichuan, home to no less than four UNESCO World Heritage sites and more than 15 minority groups is a truly beautiful province. It was also, sadly, the site of the May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake which caused great destruction and thousands of fatalities.
This exhibition also commemorates the strength and determination of the Chinese people to rebuild their lives after this devastating event and strong belief for the future of the nation.
Dear Colleagues:
A key priority of the Secretary-General Mr. Ban Ki-moon, for his second term of office is the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. Over the last three decades, China has not only seen strong economic growth, but also a significant reduction of poverty. This is an important achievement. China is now on track to meet most of the MDG targets. This accomplishment serves as a signal for the world. A signal that the MDGs can indeed be reached and that real improvements in the livelihoods of the poor are possible.
Another key priority in our quest to achieve the MDGs is sustainable development. This involves moving towards a green economy, and reconciling growth and environment in order for development to be sustainable. The United Nations is now looking towards “Rio plus 20” where we look forward to China making a strong contribution and we are sure that China will do it.
Here, in UNOG we highly value the substantive contribution of China to increasing the role of international Geneva as a unique place for pursuing multilateral diplomacy.
We also commend China for its achievements and contributions to the international community. Its commitment to the work of the United Nations, including in peacekeeping and development, is only growing. Going forward, Chinese leadership will be essential in addressing global challenges and promoting the fundamental values enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
Finally, I would like to wish the people of Sichuan province, as well as the people of China, well-being and further successes in the implementation of their economic and cultural strategies.
Thank you for your attention.
