HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE CLOSES ITS ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-THIRD SESSION

Adopts Concluding Observations and Recommendations on the Reports of Algeria, Bahrain, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Liberia, and Lithuania, and on The Gambia in the absence of a report

The Human Rights Committee this afternoon discussed its methods of work and concluded its one hundred and twenty-third session after adopting concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Algeria, Bahrain, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Liberia, and Lithuania, and on the situation in The Gambia in the absence of a report.

Yuval Shany, Committee Chairperson, informed that the Committee had held a very productive session, adopting concluding observations and recommendations on six States, which were now available on the session’s page. The Committee had adopted decisions on 42 individual communications, out of which 29 were on the merits, five inadmissible, and eight discontinued. As for the cases decided on the merits, the Committee had found violations of the Covenant in 26 cases, and no violation in three others.

The Committee had adopted six lists of issues on States parties (Niger, Angola, Viet Nam, Germany, Israel, and Eritrea), as well as a follow-up report on the concluding observations. Mr. Shany said the Committee had continued the second reading of the General Comment No. 36 on the right to life, and he expected that it would be able to adopt it at its October session.

The Committee had also made significant progress in the consideration of the draft rules of procedure. As for the methods of work, the Committee had discussed the draft report on issues prior to reporting prepared by the working group and had adopted a decision to support the main findings. Finally, Mr. Shany said the Committee had discussed a paper on the 2020 review, based on a questionnaire circulated to members of the Committee by the secretariat.

The one hundred and twenty-fourth session of the Committee will take place from 8 October to 2 November 2018 when it will consider the periodic reports of Belarus, Belize, Bulgaria, Guinea, and Sudan, as well as the situation in Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Senegal in the absence of a report.
