Remarks at the United Nations Day concert

Mesdames et Messieurs,
Chers Amis des Nations Unies

C’est pour moi un privilège d’être avec vous ce soir, à l’occasion de la Journée des Nations Unies. Ensemble, nous marquons le 59ème anniversaire de la signature de la Charte des Nations Unies – une vision pour un monde de paix et de prospérité. Cette vision – et l’organisation qui a été créée afin qu’elle devienne réalité – est aussi nécessaire aujourd’hui que lorsque la Charte fut signée.

We live in a world where people fear deadly attacks by international terrorists. People fear genocide and systematic violations of their human rights. Millions are suffering and dying from HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. And over one billion people live on less than a dollar a day. These people look to the United Nations to address these threats and challenges. The Organization is put to new tests, and we have a responsibility and a duty to respond. The United Nations remains an indispensable instrument for peace and human progress.

It plays a central role in the maintenance of international peace and security. But, as common challenges evolve, our collective mechanisms must be adapted to be able to address them. That is why the Secretary-General and the entire United Nations is committed to reforming the United Nations so that it may reflect today's realities and be equipped to tackle the threats and challenges that we face – today and tomorrow.

For the United Nations, 2005 will be a year to take stock. We will assess what we have achieved and we look ahead to see where we can advance even further in the service of the peoples of the world. World leaders will meet to review progress towards meeting the commitments of the Millennium Declaration and the eight Millennium Development Goals that spring from it. Our Organization will mark its 60th anniversary, and Geneva will be an important platform for the celebrations. These important events will provide a welcome opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to the principles and ideals of the Charter.

Les anniversaires se fêtent en famille et avec des amis. Aujourd’hui, la famille des Nations Unies à Genève célèbre son anniversaire en compagnie d’excellents amis de Genève et de toute la Suisse. Permettez-moi d’exprimer ici ma gratitude au Conseil d’État de la République et Canton de Genève, au Conseil Administratif de la Ville de Genève, ainsi qu’à la Fondation de l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande qui accueillent ce soir la communauté internationale de Genève. Ce geste généreux est un cadeau d’anniversaire très spécial et un exemple vivant de l’engagement permanent du Pays Hôte envers les efforts des Nations Unies. Croyez que nous apprécions ce soutien inconditionnel à sa juste valeur. Je saisis cette occasion pour remercier chaleureusement nos hôtes, au nom des Nations Unies à Genève.
