COMMITTEE ON THE ELIMINATION OF DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN CONCLUDES SIXTY-THIRD SESSION

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women today concluded its sixty-third session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the implementation of the provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women by the Czech Republic, Haiti, Iceland, Japan, Mongolia, Sweden, Tanzania and Vanuatu.

At the beginning of the closing meeting, Patricia Schulz, Committee Rapporteur, introduced a draft report enclosing the concluding observations and recommendations on the eight States parties considered. She also introduced the draft report of the Working Group of the Whole for adoption by the Committee, which was contained in Chapters VI and VII of the draft report. The reports were then adopted. The provisional agenda for the sixty-fourth session, as well as the provisional report of its sixty-third session were also adopted.

In closing remarks, Yoko Hayashi, Chairperson of the Committee, stated that the Committee had considered the reports of eight States parties and accommodated the request by one State party to postpone its review to the last week. The Committee was pleased by the level of attendance of local non-governmental organizations. The Committee also appreciated receiving detailed information from various United Nations agencies. One of the highlights of the session was the half-day general discussion on gender-related dimensions of disaster risk reduction and climate change. General recommendation 34, on rural women, had been adopted the previous day. It represented a milestone in promoting the rights of that large and underprivileged group of women. Three decisions had been adopted on individual communications, said Ms. Hayashi. Several working groups of the Committee had made laudable progress, for which the Chairperson thanked their members and all the Committee Experts.

The Committee adopted the provisional agenda for the sixty-fourth session, which will take place in Geneva from 4 until 22 July 2016. During the sixty-fourth session, the Committee will consider reports of the following States parties: Albania, France, Mali, Myanmar, the Philippines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey and Uruguay.
