Distinguished Chinese diplomats,
Mr. Chen Jinchun,
Dear friends

Dear Friends:
Chinese calligraphy spreads knowledge of the Chinese culture and way of life to the world. Through it, we are able to see the spirit of China. This is a spirit that has considerable and growing influence on the rest of the world. Chinese calligraphy can also serve to build bridges between cultures – a role that is shared by the United Nations. Here in Geneva, the United Nations undertakes a number of activities to facilitate cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. We recognize the importance of building bridges – and we promote this.

As we enjoy this exhibition, let us reflect on the importance of literacy, on the importance of art, and their role in bringing us, as global citizens closer together.

Thank you for your attention.
