COMMITTEE AGAINST TORTURE CONCLUDES SIXTY-FOURTH SESSION
The Committee against Torture this morning concluded its sixty-fourth session after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Mauritania, Russian Federation, Seychelles, and Chile on the implementation of the provisions of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
The Committee’s concluding observations and recommendations on the reviewed countries will be available on the session’s website.
Summarizing the sixty-fourth session, Jens Modvig, Committee Chairperson, said that the Committee had adopted concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Mauritania, Russian Federation, Seychelles and Chile. For the first time, the Committee had reviewed a report via video conference, that of Seychelles, and it had been a very positive experience that the Committee could consider doing again. The Committee had also adopted its first ever report from its intersessional working group on communications, in which decisions on 18 communications or individual complaints had been adopted, including finding violations in one case, no violations in six cases, inadmissibility of three cases, and the consideration of eight cases had been discontinued. The Committee had also held its first ever meeting with the Human Rights Committee. He thanked civil society organizations that had participated in the work of the Committee.
The sixty-fifth session of the Committee against Torture will take place from 12 November to 7 December at the Palais Wilson in Geneva, during which it will consider the reports of Canada, Guatemala, Maldives, Netherlands, Peru, and Viet Nam. The reports can be seen here.
