COMMITTEE AGAINST TORTURE CONCLUDES FIFTY-SECOND SESSION

The Committee against Torture this afternoon concluded its fifty-second session after adopting concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Cyprus, Guinea, Holy See, Lithuania, Montenegro, Sierra Leone, Thailand and Uruguay on how they implement the provisions of the Convention against Torture in their countries.

In addition to its consideration of the reports of the eight Member States, the Committee met on 9 May with the President of the Subcommittee on the Prevention of TortureOpens in new window who presented the Subcommittee’s annual report. The Committee also discussed the issue of reprisals against persons who cooperate with United Nations bodies, on the basis of a decision that they adopted at their previous session CAT/C/51/3Opens in new window. In closed meetings, the Committee considered information appearing to contain well-founded indications that torture was systematically practised in some States parties.

The fifty-third session of the Committee will be held from 3 to 28 November, during which it will review the reports of Australia, Burundi, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Ukraine, United States and Venezuela.
