New WHO recommendations aim to help health workers provide better care to the more than 200 million girls and women worldwide who live with female genital mutilation. International migration has now made the practice, prevalent in 30 countries in Africa and in a few countries in Asia and the Middle East, a global health issue. WHO’s Guidelines for Management of FGM-related Health Complications, help health workers provide better care to girls and women living with female genital mutilation and warn against medicalization of the practice.

The Global TB Programme of the World Health Organization (WHO) will announce new recommendations on the use of a rapid diagnostic test capable of detecting more severe forms of MDR-TB like extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB), and a shorter, cheaper treatment that will improve outcomes in MDR-TB patients. TB is a top infectious disease killer alongside HIV/AIDS, it kills an estimated 1.5 million people each year. MDR-TB is a public health crisis, nearly half a million people develop MDR-TB every year.
