“Faith for Rights” - a framework for mutually enriching connections between religions and human rights
Ibrahim Salama, Chief of UN Human Rights Treaties Branch, and Michael Wiener, from OHCHR’s Rule of Law and Democracy Section and former assistant to the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, will outline the role of the UN Human Rights Office in promoting a “Faith for Rights” framework across the world and the concrete steps taken during 2017 to bring faith actors from all beliefs together to articulate and implement ways how “Faith” can stand up for “Rights” more effectively.
Salama and Wiener will explain the outcome of a major meeting in Rabat in December 2017, attended by more than 100 States, national human rights institutions, regional organizations, religious authorities and faith-based civil society actors.
Among the issues discussed were: deradicalisation; defining faith-based actors’ roles and responsibilities in the defence of human rights; and concrete projects at the grassroots level to enhance the role of faith-based actors in the defence of human dignity.
Salama and Wiener will also detail the next steps for the year ahead to implement the 18 commitments on “Faith for Rights” adopted in 2017.
