New Permanent Representative of Sweden Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Magnus Hellgren, the new Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Hellgren had been serving as Deputy Director-General and Head of the Department for Middle East and North Africa at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden since 1 September 2020.  From 2017 to 2020, he was Sweden’s Ambassador to Israel. 

A career diplomat, Mr. Hellgren has held various different posts, including as Deputy Director-General at the Ministry and Head of its Department for Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Export Controls from 2015 to 2017; Director of the Department for the Middle East and North Africa from 2011 to 2015; and Minster for disarmament and non-proliferation affairs at the Swedish Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2004 to 2010, including at Ambassador rank from 2009.  He was posted to various Swedish Embassies, including in Damascus from 2001 to 2004, in Paris from 1993 to 1996, in Copenhagen in 1993, in London in 1992, and in Cairo from 1990 to 1992.   

Mr. Hellgren has a master’s degree in international economics from Gothenburg School of Economics (1987).  He worked in corporate finance before joining the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.  He was born on 1 October 1963 in Sweden and is married with two daughters.
