New Permanent Representative of South Sudan Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Alier Deng Ruai Deng, the new Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Deng had been serving as Director-General of Multilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan since February 2021, a position he also held from July 2012 to May 2015.  He served as Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan from September 2019 to February 2021.  He was the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs of South Sudan from May 2015 to May 2019.

A career diplomat, Mr. Deng worked, before the independence of South Sudan, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan from 1982 to 2011.  He was Sudan’s Ambassador to Italy from September 2008 to March 2011.  He was posted to the Sudanese Embassy in Washington D.C. from July 2001 to July 2005, and to the Permanent Mission of Sudan to the United Nations Office at Geneva from June 1993 to June 1997.  He also worked at the Sudanese Embassies in Bucharest, Romania (August 1988 to July 1990); and in Lagos, Nigeria (June 1985 to July 1988).  He held various other posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan in Khartoum.

Mr. Deng is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Peace, Development and Security Studies of the University of Juba, the University from which he also obtained a master’s degree and a post graduate diploma in peace and development.  He has a Bachelor of Law from the University of Khartoum (1981).  He was born on 18 June 1960 in Bor, South Sudan and is married.
