NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CHINA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Chen Xu, the new Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Chen had been serving as Director-General, Department of European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China since 2016. He served as China’s Ambassador to the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from 2012 to 2016. Mr. Chen served at the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations Headquarters twice, from 1998 to 2003 as a Counsellor and Minister Counsellor, and from 1988 to 1992 as an Attaché and Third Secretary.

A career diplomat, Mr. Chen joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in 1985. He has held various posts there, including as Director-General, Department of International Organizations and Conferences from 2010 to 2012; Counsellor, General Office of the Ministry from 2008 to 2010; Deputy Director General, Department of International Organizations and Conferences from 2004 to 2008; and Deputy Director General, Foreign Affairs Office, Government of Xinjang Uygur Autonomous Region of China from 2003 to 2004, among others.

Born in Yanggu, Shandong Province in February 1962, Mr. Chen has a university degree. He is married with a son.
