NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF GERMANY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Michael Ungern-Sternberg, the new Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Ungern-Sternberg had been serving as Germany’s Ambassador in Jakarta, Indonesia since 2016. He was Germany’s Ambassador in Tehran, Iran from 2013 to 2016. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Director General for the United Nations Department at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, and from 2007 to 2009 he served as its Deputy Director General.

Mr. Ungern-Sternberg served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations in New York from 2006 to 2007, and as Head of the Political Section of the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York from 2002 to 2006. He joined the German Foreign Office in 1982 and was posted in Rabat, Morocco as Second Secretary from 1986 to 1989; and in Leningrad/St. Petersburg in the Soviet Union/Russia as Deputy Consul General from 1989 to 1992. He has held other posts at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.

Mr. Ungern-Sternberg was born on 2 July 1955, and is married with three children.
