NEW PERMANENT OBSERVER OF ORGANIZATION OF ISLAMIC COOPERATION PRESENTS LETTER OF NOMINATION TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG
Nassima Baghli, the new Permanent Observer of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her letter of nomination to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Baghli, who is Algerian, had been serving as the Ambassador of Algeria to The Netherlands from 2009 to 2016, and concurrently had been Permanent Representative of Algeria to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. From 2004 to 2009, she held various posts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, including Director for Security Issues and Disarmament (2008-2009); and Deputy Director for Social and Cultural Affairs (2004-2006). From 2000 to 2004, Ms. Baghli served as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations Office at Geneva in charge of disarmament and human rights affairs.
A career diplomat, Ms. Baghli joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1989 and was in charge of the press at the Communication and Documentation Department until 1992. From 1992 to 1996, she was in charge of press and information at the Algerian Embassy in Brussels, and from 1996 to 1997, was Head of Office at the African Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ms. Baghli has represented Algeria in numerous regional and international meetings, including meetings of the Commission on Human Rights and the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
Born in Algiers on 22 January 1965, Ms. Baghli has a B.A. in English from the University of Algiers and a Masters in International Relations from the University of Paris XI/Ceris (Brussels).
