NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ISRAEL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA
Aviva Raz-Shechter, the new Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Raz-Shechter served as the Deputy Director General for the Middle East and Peace Process Division at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem since 2011. From 2005 until 2011, she served as the Director of the Department for Antisemitism and Holocaust Issues at the Ministry. From 2000 to 2005, she was the Minister Counselor for Public and Academic Affairs at the Embassy of Israel in Washington. From 1998 to 2000, Ms. Raz-Shechter held various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, including those of the Director of the Lebanon Desk and Coordinator of Israel’s negotiating delegation to peace talks with Lebanon.
In 1997 and 1998, Ms. Raz-Shechter served as a Political Counselor at the Embassy of Israel in Jordan, while from 1996 until 1997 she was a First Secretary at the African Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her first posting abroad was at the Consulate General of Israel in Montreal, where she served from 1991 to 1995. In 1990-1991, Ms. Raz-Shechter was a political researcher at the Ministry’s Centre for Political Research. She entered the Israeli Foreign Service in 1988, when she started a two-year long Foreign Service Diplomatic Cadet Course.
Ms. Raz-Shechter holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Middle Eastern and International Affairs from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She held the position of a research assistant to Professor Rafael Israeli at the Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace in Jerusalem between 1986 and 1990.
