NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF KAZAKHSTAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Zhanar Aitzhanova, the new Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Aitzhanova had been serving as Minister of Economic Integration of Kazakhstan since 2011. From 2010 to 2011, she served as Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Kazakhstan. She was Vice Minister of Industry and Trade of Kazakhstan from 2003 to 2010. She also served as Special Representative and Chief Negotiator for Kazakhstan’s accession to the World Trade Organization from 2005 to 2015.

Ms. Aitzhanova worked for the United Nations at the beginning of her career, including as Programme Coordinator for the United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States in Central Asia, in New York from 1999 to 2002; Assistant to the United Nations Coordinator and the United Nations Development Programme’s Representative in Mongolia from 1997 to 1999; and as Programme Coordinator of the United Nations Representation Office in Kazakhstan from 1993 to 1996. From 1988 to 1992, she worked as a Researcher at the Kazakh State University named after S.M. Kirov (1988 to 1989); the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (1989 to 1990); and the Charles University and Central European University (1991 to 1992).

Ms. Aitzhanova was born on 9 May 1965. She has degrees from the Kazakh State University named after S.M. Kirov (1988), the Joint Vienna Institute (1997), and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (2003). She is married with two children.
