NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF URUGUAY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO ACTING DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Ricardo González Arenas, the new Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, from 2010 until 2014, Mr. González Arenas served as the Director-General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay. Between 2007 and 2010, he was the Ambassador of Uruguay to Spain. From 2005 to 2007, Mr. González Arenas served as the Deputy Permanent Representative of Uruguay to the United Nations Office at Geneva. He also served in Geneva as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Uruguay from 1986 to 1991.

During his career, Mr. González Arenas performed numerous duties in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay in Montevideo and abroad, including in Brussels. He was the president of the delegation of Uruguay to the Human Rights Council between 2010 and 2012, and the National Coordinator for the South American Community of Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). He joined the Foreign Ministry in 1983.

Mr. González Arenas holds a PhD in diplomacy and a Bachelor’s degree in law and international relations from the Universidad de la República in Montevideo. He has completed various specialized courses in international law, regional integration, agricultural policies and international negotiations in Geneva and Brussels. Born in 1955, Mr. González Arenas has published a number of articles on Uruguay’s foreign policy, negotiations and information society.
