NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF GERMANY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Hanns Heinrich Schumacher, the new Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Schumacher had been serving as Germany’s Ambassador to Thailand since 2008. From 2007 to 2008, he served as Germany’s Ambassador to Iraq, and from 2003 to 2007, he was Germany’s Ambassador to Finland.
From 1999 to 2003, he was Ambassador and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York, including as Charge d’Affaires from September 2001 to November 2002.

A career diplomat, Mr. Schumacher joined the Diplomatic Service in 1979. From 1997 to 1999, he was Senior Deputy High Representative for the Civil Implementation of the Dayton Peace Accord, OHR Sarajevo. He was Germany’s Ambassador to Namibia from 1993 to 1997. Among other duties and posts, he was Spokesperson of the Foreign Office from 1991 to 1993; Deputy Spokesperson from 1989 to 1991; and Personal Assistant to the Foreign Minister from 1986 to 1989.

Mr. Schumacher studied political science and law and has a Ph.D (1979). He was born on 10 November 1948 in Duisburg-Hamborn in Germany and is married with three children.
