NEW PERMANENT OBSERVER OF COUNCIL OF EUROPE PRESENTS LETTER OF NOMINATION TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Petru Dumitriu, the new Permanent Observer of the Council of Europe to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his letter of nomination to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Dumitriu had been serving as National Coordinator of the Alliance of Civilizations in Romania, concurrently representing Romania at the Executive Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, since 2010. In 2009 and 2010, he was Director-General for Multilateral Affairs at the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2008, he was Director-General for the United Nations and the Francophnie at the Ministry, and in December 2006 and 2007, he was Director-General for Global Affairs at the Ministry.

Mr. Dumitriu served as the Deputy Permanent Representative at the Romanian Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2000 to 2006. From 1998 to 2000, he was the Director of the Direction of the United Nations and its Specialized Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania. From 1993 to 1997, he served at the Permanent Mission of Romania to the United Nations in New York, first as First Secretary and then as Deputy Permanent Representative in 1997. Mr. Dumitriu started his career as an economist in 1979, working in the business sector and then at the Ministry for Foreign Trade and International Economic Cooperation.

Mr. Dumitriu has represented Romania on numerous international temporary missions and he has a number of publications. He has several degrees including a Bachelor Degree in International Economic Relations (1979); a Master of Arts in Diplomacy (1992); a Ph.D. on the Reform of the United Nations (2005); and a Diplôme d'études approfondies DEA (2006). He was born on 29 June 1955 and is married with one child.
