NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SUDAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Abdelrahman Mohamed Abdalla Dhirar, the new Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva Mr. Dhirar had served as the Ambassador of Sudan to Syria, where he was Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, from 2005 to 2011. Between 2003 and 2005 he was Chef du Cabinet at the Office of the First Vice President. During this time he was a member of the negotiating team for the Naivasha (Kenya) Peace Talks that produced the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 that ended the civil war between North and South Sudan. From 1995 to 2003 he was posted to the Sudanese Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. From 1993 to 1995 he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Khartoum, and prior to that was posted to Sweden, working at the Sudanese Embassy in Stockholm, from 1989 to 1993. From 1983 to 1987 Mr. Dhirar conducted a tour of duty in Lagos, at the Sudanese Embassy to Nigeria and from 1981 to 1983 he served at the Embassy of Sudan in Sana'a, Yemen. He first joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1979.

Mr. Dhirar has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Khartoum, Sudan (1975) and holds diplomas in French language and television production. He speaks Arabic, English and French.

Mr. Dhirar was born on 12 August 1950 in el-Ghaba, Northern State, Sudan. He is married and has five children.
