NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MYANMAR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Maung Wai, the new Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Wai had been serving as Director–General of the International Organizations and Economic Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar since 2010. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Wai served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations in New York. Other foreign posts include serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Myanmar in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 1999 to 2003; Second Secretary at the Embassy of Myanmar in Washington, United States from 1992 to 1995; and Third Secretary/Second Secretary at the Embassy of Myanmar in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 1984 to 1989.

A career diplomat, Mr. Wai has served in various capacities since he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980. They include being Director-General of the ASEAN Affairs Department at the Ministry from 2009 to 2010; Deputy Director-General of the Consular and Legal Affairs Department at the Ministry from 2008 to 2009; and Director of the Department of Political Affairs at the Ministry from 2003 to 2005.

Mr. Wai has participated in various sessions of the UN General Assembly and other regional and international meetings as a member of the Myanmar delegation. He has a Bachelor of Agriculture degree from the Institute of Agriculture in Yezin, Myanmar. He was born on 11 November, 1953 in Shwebo, Myanmar and is married with a son.
