NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF HUNGARY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Klara Tunyogi Akots, the new Permanent Representative of Hungary to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Akots had been serving as a Member of the Foreign and Security Policy Council, the Advisory Board of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, since 2007, and concurrently she worked in the private sector. She served in the Office of the Prime Minister from 2002 to 2006, first as Chief Foreign and Security Policy Adviser of Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy (2002-2004); then as Foreign Policy Adviser of Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany (2004-2006).

A career diplomat, Ms. Akots joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1989. Her assignments at the Ministry include being Deputy Chief of Department from 1998 to 2001; State Secretariat for Integration, Deputy Chief of Department for the European Union from 1996 to 1997; Deputy Chief of Department of Scandinavian Countries from 1995 to 1996; and Deputy Chief of Mission in Tel Avis, Israel from 1991 to 1995. Ms. Akots also served as the Deputy State Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Nature Conservation in 1998, responsible for the European Union accession negotiations.

Ms. Akots was born in Szekesfehervar, Hungary on 24 August, 1956. She studied at the University of Economics in Budapest from 1974 to 1978, specialised in international relations and foreign trade. At the beginning of her career, she was active is student and youth movements, and was Chief of the Department of International Relations of the Youth Movement from 1983 to 1988. She is married with a daughter.
