NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF UZBEKISTAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Goulnora Karimova, the new Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Karimova had been working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan since 1995, first as an Adviser to the Minister and then as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from the beginning of 2008. From 1995 to 1997, she worked at the Ministry, first in the Department of Political Analysis and Prognosis and then as an Adviser to the Minister. From 2000 to 2003, she served as an Adviser to the Minister, assigned to work on the nuclear free zone agreement and to be an Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the United Nations and then as an Adviser to the Minister.

Ms. Karimova’s foreign assignments include serving as Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of Uzbekistan in the Russian Federation from 2003 to 2005; and as Adviser at the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the United Nations in 1998.

At the beginning of her career, Ms. Karimova worked at the Central Department of Statistics of Uzbekistan; as a translator at the Chamber of Commerce of Uzbekistan; and as a lecturer, probationer at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent.

Ms. Karimova has a number of degrees, including a BA in philosophy and international economy from Tashkent State University (1994); MA in political sciences from the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan in Tashkent (1996); MA in regional studies from Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in Massachusetts (2000); Ph.D. in political sciences from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent (2001); and BA in telecommunications from Tashkent University of Informational Techonologies (2005). She was born on July 8, 1972, in Farghana, Uzbekistan.
