NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF NEPAL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Dinesh Bhattarai, the new Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, in 2006, Mr. Bhattarai had served as Convener at the National Authority for Disarmament Affairs in Nepal. In 2005, he was Joint Secretary at the United Nations, International Organizations and International Law Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2004, he was Joint Secretary in the South Asia, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, Bay of Bengal Initiative for MultiSectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2003, he was in-charge of the Multilateral Economic Affairs Division of the Ministry.

From 1998 to 2003, Mr. Bhattarai was Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Nepal in Washington D.C., United States. From 2001 to 2002, he was Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy. Other overseas postings include serving as First Secretary (Political) at the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi, India from 1991 to 1994.

A career diplomat, Mr. Bhattarai also served in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Division as well as the Southeast, Northeast Asia and Pacific Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He joined the Ministry in 1983.

Mr. Bhattarai holds a Masters degree in Public Administration and Economics from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. He also holds a Bachelor in Commerce from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; a Bachelor of Law from Tribhuvan University; a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Development from the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague; and a PhD in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Mr. Bhattarai was born on 27 April 1953 in Balkot, Arghakhanchri, Nepal. He is married and has two daughters.
