NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF KENYA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Presentation of Credentials

Maria Nzomo, the new Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Nzomo had been serving, since 2003, as Kenyan Ambassador and High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho.

From 2002 to 2003, Ms. Nzomo served as the Director of the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies at the University of Nairobi; she also taught diplomacy, political economy and international studies there. From 2000 to 2003, she was a visiting Professor at the Central European University Summer Institute in Budapest, Hungary. Before that, she served as a national and international consultant on political economy, globalization governance and gender issues.

Ms. Nzomo has extensive public service experience, including being Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women of Kenya from 1992 to 2003 and being Chairperson/Director of a number of gender and human rights non-governmental organizations in Kenya from 1992 to 1997. She is also an author with more than 60 publications on political economy, governance and gender issues.

Ms. Nzomo has a Ph.D. in political science and international relations from Dalhousie University in Canada and an MA in political science from McMaster University in Canada. She also has a BA in political science from the University of Nairobi.
