NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF NICARAGUA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG
Alicia Martin Gallegos, the new Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Martin Gallegos had been serving, from 2004, as Nicaragua’s Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization in Geneva. From 1994 to 2004, she was a Senior Advisor to the Minister of Development, Industry and Trade of Nicaragua and was responsible for important trade negotiations. Between 1991 and 1994, she worked at the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development as Chief Project Officer in Capacity Building for Trade Negotiations in Central America, during which time she provided technical assistance to the Governments of Honduras and El Salvador in their accession process to the GATT, as well as to Central American countries in their participation in the Uruguay Round Negotiations.
From 1981 to 1991, Ms. Martin Gallegos served as Director General of Trade Policy and Director General of International Organizations at the Ministry of Economy and Trade of Nicaragua, during which time she was, between 1985 and 1990, Special Representative of Nicaragua to the GATT; and Nicaragua’s representative to the International Coffee Organization, International Sugar Organization, and Deputy Governor of the Common Fund for Commodities. From 1971 to 1981, she was Counsellor in the Development Division of the GATT.
Ms. Martin Gallegos graduated with a degree from the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of the University of Geneva, and undertook Doctoral Studies in Sociology from the Free University of Berlin.
