Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women Closes Eighty-second Session
The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women today closed its eighty-second session after adopting concluding observations on the reports of Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Mongolia, Morocco, Namibia, Portugal, Türkiye and United Arab Emirates, which were considered during the session.
In her concluding remarks, Nahla Haidar, Committee Vice-Chairperson, said that it was a shame that the Committee Chair, Gladys Acosta Vargas, could not attend the closing session due to illness, as she had made a tremendous contribution to the session.
Ms. Haidar saluted that the Committee had worked hard over the session and made great achievements. In particular, she highlighted the statement issued by the Committee, “ Women’s access to safe and legal abortion: urgent call for the United States of America to adhere to the Convention.” The statement reflected the Committee’s position on this very concerning issue.
The high-level dialogue organized by the International Indigenous Women’s Forum on the Committee’s draft general recommendation on the rights of indigenous women and girls was another major achievement, Ms. Haidar said. She also noted that the Committee had met with the Human Rights Committee during the session.
In closing, she thanked all members of the Secretariat who contributed to successfully conducting the session.
The Committee adopted ad referendum the report of its eighty-second session, as well as the provisional agenda for its eighty-third session.
The eighty-third session of the Committee is scheduled to be held from 10 to 28 October 2022.
