Mr. Alkalaj
Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen:
On behalf of Acting Director-General Mr. Michael Møller, who was unable to be here this afternoon, I would like to welcome you to the opening of the exhibition and film screening on the “E40” trans-European highway. Our sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Alkalaj and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe for showcasing this subject matter here at the Palais des Nations. Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank the ECE for being one of the most active participants in and contributors to the Cultural Activities Programme of UNOG.
One might not immediately associate the individual excellent photos of this famous artery, or ‘highway’ with international collaboration and economic integration. However, that is exactly what the E40 represents.
Conceived by the United Nations after World War II to develop international communication and transport links, the 8,000 kilometre long E40 highway passes through no less than 10 different countries. In this, it continues the illustrious traditions of the Silk Road, the Spice Road, etc., not only transporting goods, but also carrying people, beliefs and culture between east and west.
The road also serves as a reminder and example of the essential work of the UN Economic Commission for Europe in developing efficient, harmonized, safe and sustainable transport systems across the European continent. UNECE is a key player of the United Nations family in Geneva, especially in the setting of norms and standards and technical cooperation on a range of issues that affect our daily lives.
This is why we are so pleased to feature this interesting exhibition and film at the Palais for the international community in Geneva.
I hope that as we experience the artists’ journey along the E40, we will look at the road in a new and inspiring way, recognizing its role in promoting economic and social development and cooperation among nations.
Thank you.
