Excellencies
Ladies and gentlemen:
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Palais des Nations for a concert by the renowned National Chorus of Korea.
I would like to express my appreciation to Ambassador Choi Seokyoung and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea, without whom this event would not have been possible.
The Republic of Korea has been a strong supporter of the United Nations, since the founding of the Republic in 1945. I thank the Korean Government and people for this commitment to our Organization.
It is clear that the world is changing. Everyone has a role to play as we try to find our footing in this new era.
With its vibrant democracy and well established rule of law, Korea can play a bridging role for countries undergoing political transitions.
With its robust economy, Korea can contribute greatly to sustainable development. And it can help keep the peace in countries like South Sudan where it now contributes peacekeepers.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
The Palais des Nations - home to the UN in Geneva – is where governments, UN entities and all our many partners come together to work on these global issues. Normally in this room, we meet to discuss and act on human rights situations around the world. Sometimes, countries agree. Sometimes serious differences are raised.
Tonight, we are united in our appreciation of music and the joy it brings. Let the harmony embodied by this chorus inspire us in our work.
Thank you very much.
This speech is part of a curated selection from various official events and is posted as prepared.
