Excellency President Gašparovič
Ladies and Gentlemen:
It is my honour to accept the gift of these beautiful statues, “Poetry” and “Music”, for the United Nations Office at Geneva. I would like to express my warmest appreciation to President Gašparovič, as well as the Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic for this most generous donation. With his artwork, Mr. Arpád Račko has truly given us a wonderful addition to the Palais des Nations.
The poet Henry David Thoreau wrote that "In a world of peace and love, music would be the universal language." I would argue that poetry also speaks a universal language. It is through poetry and through music that we find our common humanity. These art forms build bridges between cultures – a role that is shared by the United Nations. Here in Geneva, we undertake many activities to facilitate cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. We recognize the importance of building bridges – and we promote this.
In these statues I also see a celebration of women. Not beauty alone, but also strength, poise and intelligence. It is a United Nations priority and part of the action plan of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to work with and for women around the globe. It is critical that women fully participate in all aspects of life – economic, political and social. The world - and all of us - are better off for it.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am grateful to the Slovak Republic for this gift. These statues will serve as a reminder of these universal themes and inspire us all.
Thank you very much.
