Event to mark the 40th anniversary of the adoption of General Assembly Resolution 2758 on the representation of the People's Republic of China at the United Nations and the National Day of China

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am honoured and delighted to be with you to mark the 40^th anniversary of General Assembly Resolution 2758 and the National Day of China. Together, these two occasions provide a welcome opportunity to thank China for the wide-ranging contributions to our Organization and to the promotion of the values of the Charter.

The recognition of the People’s Republic of China as the legitimate representative to the United Nations has been the foundation of a strong role in multilateralism. As China has transformed itself, it has integrated itself globally to become an essential element in our endeavour for a better world.
As the world increasingly looks to China, so China also continues to increase its involvement with the United Nations. Over the past 40 years, China has brought to the Organization its unique experience and expertise to sustainable development, peacekeeping, disarmament and humanitarian work. This active engagement benefits both the United Nations and the people of China.

The economic growth and reduction in poverty in China over the past four decades provide inspiration and ideas for innovation across the world. As the Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, has identified sustainable development as a key priority for his second term, we rely on China to continue sharing its knowledge and know-how. With only four years to go before the deadline, this work is especially important.

At the United Nations Office at Geneva, we greatly appreciate China’s firm commitment to building understanding and respect through cross-cultural dialogue. China remains one of the most active participants in our Cultural Activities Programme. The rich heritage of China, the determination, dynamism and diligence of the Chinese people and their generosity of spirit, impress and inspire people worldwide. We are pleased to provide a forum where this can be shared.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
I have just returned from the opening of the General Assembly in New York. This was the busiest week ever for the United Nations, with over 120 Heads of State and Government taking part. It showed how the United Nations remains the world’s pre-eminent platform for multilateral action. As Mr. Ban Ki-moon said in his remarks to the Assembly, seven billion people now look to the United Nations for leadership and solutions. They look to us, and to all Member States, to act with courage, compassion and conviction.

I thank China for being part of that effort. As over the past forty years, China’s leadership and vision will continue to be central to a strong United Nations.
