COMMITTEE ON ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCES CONCLUDES SIXTH SESSION

The Committee on Enforced Disappearances closed its sixth session this afternoon after adopting its concluding observations and recommendations on the reports of Germany and the Netherlands. It also agreed lists of issues on Belgium and Paraguay, whose reports it would consider at its next session.

During its two-week session, the Committee, which is responsible for reviewing how States implement the provisions of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, held a public discussion on the topic of “enforced disappearances and military justice”, the theme considered to be of relevance to the Committee’s work and which may be the subject of a future general comment. It reviewed communications, information and requests regarding alleged violations of the Convention. The Committee also examined and adopted lists of issues on the reports submitted by Belgium and Paraguay, which will be considered at the next session.

The Committee also met with States, relevant United Nations bodies and non-governmental organizations on matters related to the implementation of the Convention.

The seventh session of the Committee will be held in Geneva from 15 to 26 September 2014, during which the reports of Belgium and Paraguay will be considered.
