U.S. Perspectives on the Nuclear Ban Treaty in the Current Security Context
The treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons is set to open for signature at the UNGA next week. The United States does not intend to ever become a party to the treaty, and is concerned with its failure to offer any solution to the grave threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear program, or other security challenges that make nuclear deterrence necessary. Ambassador Wood will discuss how the purported ban risks undermining the existing international security architecture which contributes to the maintenance of international peace and security.
