New Permanent Representative of Denmark Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Ib Petersen, the new Permanent Representative of Denmark to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Petersen had been serving as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director (management) of the United Nations Population Fund since September 2020. 

A career diplomat, Mr. Petersen served as the Permanent Representative of Denmark to the United Nations in New York from August 2013 to December 2018. 

He has held many different positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, including Director of the Department for Migration, Stabilisation and Fragility from January to August 2020; Special Envoy on Stabilization and Fragility from August to December 2019; Undersecretary for Communications and Consular Affairs from January to August 2019; State Secretary for Development Policy from 2009 to 2013; and State Secretary (Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the United Nations) from 2007 to 2009.

Mr. Petersen was the Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Danish Embassy in Harare from 1995 to 1998.  He also worked at the World Bank in Washington D.C. as the Executive Director’s Assistant (Nordic Office) from 1988 to 1991. 

Mr. Petersen was born on 18 May 1960.  He is married and has two sons.
