NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF NEPAL PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA
Mani Prasad Bhattarai, the new Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Bhattarai had been serving as Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal since February 2016. He served as Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of Nepal in Bahrain from November 2014 to August 2015. He was the Counsellor/Ministerial Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in New York from July 2010 to July 2014. He was especially assigned there to support Nepal’s chairmanship at the Global Least Developing Countries Coordination Bureau (2009 to 2013) in New York.
A career diplomat since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 1988, Mr. Bhattarai served as Under Secretary at the South Asia Division, North East Division, and United Nations and International Law Division at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from January 2005 to June 2010, and also as a Desk Officer separately for India and China affairs. He worked as a planning officer at the National Planning Commission of Nepal for over a decade at the beginning of his career.
Mr. Bhattarai holds a Master’s degree in English literature and an MBA from Tribbuvan University in 1989 and 1995 respectively. He also received a Master’s degree in economics and development from the Institute of Social Affairs in The Hague in December 1996. He was born in Morang district of Nepal on 19 July 1963. He is married and has one daughter.
