NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CHILE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA

Juan Eduardo Eguiguren, the new Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Eguiguren had been serving as Director of Regional Multilateral Integration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile since December 2016. From July 2010 to November 2016, he was Chile’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador to Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

During his diplomatic career, Mr. Eguiguren served as Director of Multilateral Policy from January 2009 to July 2010; Director of Special Policies (International Security) between September 2007 and January 2009; Deputy Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2003 to 2007; and Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Chile to the United Nations in New York between 1996 and 2000, including serving as Deputy Representative to the United Nations Security Council from 1996 to 1997.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Mr. Eguiguren headed the Department of Environment (1994–1995), and the United Nations Department (2001–2002). He also served in Syria (1982-1984), Haiti (1984-1987), Bolivia (1989-1991), and the United Kingdom (1991-1994).

Mr. Eguiguren received a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Chile, and he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy Andrés Bello. He did his PhD studies at the London School of Economics. He is married with three children.
