NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF INDIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO ACTING DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNOG

Ajit Kumar, the new Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Kumar was the Consul General of India in Atlanta, in the United States. He previously served as Consul General of India in Frankfurt. He has also been the Ambassador of India to Zimbabwe and Consul General of India Durban, South Africa. Mr. Kumar first joined the Foreign Service in 1979 and has held posts in Damascus, Mexico City, Islamabad and New Delhi.

Mr. Kumar was previously the Director and Joint Secretary of the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. As the deputy leader of the Indian delegation to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, he participated in multilateral negotiations on the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in the 1990s. He attended several sessions of the United Nations Disarmament Commission, the United Nations First Committee on Disarmament, and meetings on international security issues in New York. He also attended several sessions of the Conference of State parties of the Chemical Weapons Convention in the Hague and was a member of India’s delegation to the Ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement in Cartagena, Colombia.

Mr. Kumar is married and has two children.
