NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF FIJI PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Nazhat Shameem, the new Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented her credentials to Michael Møller, the Acting Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to her appointment to Geneva, Ms. Shameem had been working since 2009 as a legal practitioner and legal consultant, planning and conducting training programmes for judges, magistrates and lawyers on advocacy, legal and judicial skills, human rights and the justice system, gender competence and cultural awareness in the courts.

Ms. Shameem became Fiji’s first female prosecutor in 1984 and the first female Director of Public Prosecutions in Fiji in 1994. She was Puisne Judge, High Court of Fiji from 1999 to 2009. Ms. Shameem has attended numerous international conferences and delivered papers on criminal justice in Fiji, women and crime, sentencing, corruption, offences against women and children and gender justice, abortion laws in Fiji, extradition, sexual harassment in the work place, the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Fiji, the judiciary and the media, juvenile justice in Fiji, human trafficking law and practice, corporate governance, proceeds of crime and money laundering, and HIV and the law.

Ms. Shameem was born on 16 November 1960 in Fiji. She has a Bachelor of Arts in law from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom (1978 to 1981); a Masters of Law from the University of Cambridge (1981 to 1982); and a Master of Philosophy in criminology from the University of Cambridge (1987 to 1988).
